At Mujeres Raíz, we recognize that access to legal information is a fundamental tool for women to defend their rights, make informed decisions, and break the cycles of violence, discrimination, and exclusion. Women are often unaware of the legal avenues available for protection, don't know which institutions to turn to, or are afraid to take the first step. Therefore, at our organization, we work to provide clear, friendly, and responsible guidance, always in an environment of respect and humane support.
Our Legal Information service does not replace the work of a lawyer, but it does open a door of trust so that each woman can understand her rights, identify the available mechanisms, and be directed to the competent institutions or strategic allies who can provide specialized follow-up.
Violence against women is a painful reality that is often hidden in silence. At Mujeres Raíz, we provide guidance on the different types of violence (physical, psychological, sexual, economic, and property) and on the legal avenues available to seek protection and justice. We explain how to file complaints with the Prosecutor's Office or the OIJ (Official Court of Justice), how to request protective measures in Domestic Violence Courts, and what support services are offered by INAMU (National Institute of Women's Affairs) and other state institutions. We also work to raise awareness about the importance of prevention, self-care, and seeking timely help.
We explain in a simple way the fundamental rights that protect women in Costa Rica and within the framework of the international conventions ratified by the country. This includes rights related to gender equality, non-discrimination, participation in public life, and the right to a life free from violence. Our goal is for women to understand not only the legal texts, but also how they apply in their daily lives and which institutions are responsible for guaranteeing them.
Access to justice should not be a privilege, but a guaranteed right. In this area, we provide guidance on the basic steps every woman should know to defend her rights before various institutions: how to file complaints, how to initiate administrative proceedings, what requirements they will need to meet in court, and the timeframes established by law. We provide practical information and initial support so women can navigate the justice system with greater security and confidence.
Many migrant women and asylum seekers face additional barriers due to their immigration status. At Mujeres Raíz, we provide information on regularization procedures at the General Directorate of Migration and Foreigners, the importance of having a valid DIMEX (Mexican Immigration and Foreigners Identification Number), and the rights they have even while in the asylum process. Our focus is on ensuring that no woman is excluded from access to healthcare, education, or decent work due to a lack of information about her immigration status.
Women are often more vulnerable to labor exploitation, unequal wages, and informal work. That's why we provide information about the basic rights established in the Labor Code: minimum wage, overtime pay, Christmas bonuses, vacation time, contributions to the Costa Rican Social Security Fund, and maternity protection. We also provide guidance on how to file complaints, which institutions intervene in labor disputes, and what legal remedies can be sought in the event of unjustified dismissal or workplace harassment.
At Mujeres Raíz, we support women with closeness and empathy. We know that it's often not easy to take the first step, so our mission is to listen without judgment, provide responsible guidance, and address cases when appropriate. We do not offer legal representation, but we do pave the way for women to access justice and exercise their rights with greater freedom and dignity.
